NAACP Wants to Deny Mobile's Azalea Trail Maids Participation in Inaugrual Parade

Perhaps these people objecting to the Mobile Maids in their hoop skirts need to read Isle of Canes about Louisiana's gens de couleur (people of color) who were the masters and mistresses and dressed in the finest Parisian fashions.

The history of this country is so much more complex and diverse than the brief aquaintance that counts as most Americans' education, it is sad.

NAACP cries fowl over Trail Maids

Montgomery, Ala. (WSFA) -- They're part of a long standing tradition that will soon become a part of Presidential history.
The head of the Alabama NAACP, however, wants Mobile's Azalea Trail Maids to stay home on Inauguration Day, claiming the group reminds him of slavery.
"These are not just regular costumes. These are the costumes that remind someone of the plantation in Gone with the Wind," Edward Vaughn said in a phone interview.
Vaughn went on to say the group would be the laughing stock of the Inauguration. County leaders say nothing could be further from the truth.
"We want everyone to know that these young ladies do not need to be identified with slavery," said Mobile County Commissioner Stephen Nodine.
"I don't see what the dresses have to do with racism. I don't see it. It's just a regular dress to me. Just a dress they wore back in the day," said Carolyn Tius of Montgomery.
Organizers stand behind the tradition, but opponents say tradition is the problem.
"We needed something that could show Alabama's great progress rather than something that shows a shameful past," Vaughn said.

If Obama's okay with it (and I'm sure they wouldn't be involved if he weren't), why should this guy pipe up?

I thought all this raaaaaaacissssssst talk was going to stop as soon as Obama was elected. Post-racial politics and all that jive.

Well this is familiar "incident" isn't it? What is Racist and What is Racial?

Those who don't learn from History are doomed to repeat it. My memory is that Lincoln didn't want to punish the south he wanted the UNION intact. So whitewash history just how far back would Edward Vaughn like to go. After all Lincoln was trying to Win the War, when he freed the slaves he swelled the military ranks, he added troops- to win the war. The thin veneer that is being applied to this inaugural, isn't going unnoticed by people who have studied Lincoln, his times, and the Civil War.
