The Audacity of Colin Powell

by Janet Crain
Last week Colin Powell went after Sarah Palin. Now he is blaming Rush Limbaugh for the sinking fortunes of the GOP. Some say he is trying to position himself as the new head of the Republican Party.

I don't think crossing party lines and endorsing the other party's candidate on national TV is exactly the best way to position yourself for a leadership role, but I would like to know what others think.

Would you support Colin Powell as head of the Republican Party or should he just fade away like a good old soldier.

Powell says the GOP tried to use 'polarization for political advantage.'

(CNN) — The Republican party must stop "shouting at the world" and start listening to minority groups if it is to win elections in the 21st century, former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday.

In an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria for Sunday's "GPS" program, President Bush's former secretary of state said his party's attempt "to use polarization for political advantage" backfired last month.

"I think the party has to take a hard look at itself," Powell said in the interview, which was taped Wednesday. "There is nothing wrong with being conservative. There is nothing wrong with having socially conservative views — I don't object to that. But if the party wants to have a future in this country, it has to face some realities. In another 20 years, the majority in this country will be the minority."

Powell, who crossed party lines and endorsed President-elect Barack Obama just weeks before the election, said the GOP must see what is in the "hearts and minds" of African-American, Hispanic and Asian voters "and not just try to influence them by… the principles and dogma."

"I think the party has to stop shouting at the world and at the country,"Powell said. "I think that the party has to take a hard look at itself, and I've talked to a number of leaders in recent weeks and they understand that." Powell, who says he still considers himself a Republican, said his party should also stop listening to conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

Colin Powell betrayed this country when he stopped the first Gulf War. I was there when we turned around and went home and we were all furious as we knew we'd be going back under much worse conditions and in a way that would be far less successful.

He was far more interested in the byplay of diplomatic circles with the leaders of Europe and our politicians than he ever was in serving the real interests of the United States.

Colin Powell has ALWAYS been about himself and his elite pals in Washington. He didn't have any problem with Cain's "my freinds" relationship with the democrats and Republican turn-coats.

He only turned on Cain when Cain tried to get the the Christian right on board by picking Sarah Palin. Colin Powell can stomach just about every sort of ideology - even bin Laden's - but he'd prefer the rounding up of Christian Evangelicals for extermination ala Auschwitz.

Colin Powell is entitled to his opinion, and I am entitled not to like it. I have lost all respect for him. I would not accept him in a leadership role in the Republican Party......That job should go to Michael Steele, someone whom has been loyal to the party and the Party's Ideals...The reason why the Republican Party has been having so many problems is because of people like Colin Powell in the party.....Blaming Rush Limbaugh,(whom I am a big fan of) does no good, and only makes me more disaappointed in Colin Powell, then I already am. Rush is just a Radio Talk show host and commentator, next who is Colin going to blame Sean Hannity? As for Sarah Palin, Colin could have met with her at any time during the campaign, but chose not to. He was supposed to be friends with John McCain, but chose not to even call him with any concerns he may have had, and didn't even give him the courtesy of calling him, and letting him know he was going to publically endorse Barrack Obama. Does that really sound honorable to you? It sounds very dishonorable if you ask me. colin Powell did not have a problem with the Republican Party when they were promoting him to higher posts. From my point of view, he only did what he did, because President Bush and different members of the Bush Administration bruised his ego by not following every word he said, they didn't agree with him and let him know that, and Colin wants to be coddled. Colin Powell forgot he worked for President Bush, not the other way around. President Bush was Colin's boss, and it was Colin's job to enact the policies that president Bush wanted, not the other way around.......In closing I would like to say, with friends like Colin Powell, who need enemies......

Does Colin Powell believe that the only way to save the Republican Party is to turn it into some Democratic Party Redux? What would be the point? One party would be irrelevant if they agree with each other ideologically.

I think Colin Powell and John McCain and others are trying to nudge Sarah out. They both are really irritating me, talking about moving the gop even further to the left. That is the problem now, it is too much like the dems. We need to go in the exact opposite direction.
