TIME Takes a Look Back in Time

Hat Tip:
Their big, utterly predictable and therefore unreadable package includes a long interview by Time liberal media conspiracy member Richard Stengel and some stuff about how Obama is a nifty point guard. He beat out four other alleged "candidates" who were put forward for appearance's sake. Mostly Time liked the excuse to run these pictures of Obama, so that they could gaze upon them and imagine they might have befriended him back then when all were young and fancy free, and thereby be in a better position to receive a minor cabinet appointment in his administration. Hope lives.

I did manage to get photos of three of the runner-ups:

But the winner is

Media Dropped the Ball

By Mark Finkelstein (Bio | Archive)
December 16, 2008 - 08:20 ET

Video Here: http://www.eyeblast.tv/public/checker.aspx?v=ydpr8zQukU
Rahm Emanuel, a congressman from Chicago and a friend of Obama's, told me that he, Obama, David Wilhelm, who was Blagojevich's campaign co-chair, and another Blagojevich aide were the top strategists of Blagojevich's victory. He and Obama "participated in a small group that met weekly when Rod was running for governor," Emanuel said. "We basically laid out the general election, Barack and I and these two." A spokesman for Blagojevich confirmed Emanuel's account, although David Wilhelm, who now works for Obama, said that Emanuel had overstated Obama's role. -- from Making It: How Chicago Shaped Obama, by Ryan Lizza, the New Yorker, July 21, 2008.

In one of the more incisive indictments of the MSM I've witnessed, certainly by one of its own, Joe Scarborough tore into the media this morning for its failure to have investigated Barack Obama's political roots. In particular, the Morning Joe host ripped the MSM for not testing the truth of Ryan Lizza's reporting, above, of Rahm Emanuel's claim that he and Obama were central figures in Blago's 2002 gubernatorial campaign. Scarborough pointed out that already this summer, when the Lizza article appeared, it was known that Blago was under a deep ethical cloud. Yet the MSM charged off to Wasilla to investigate Sarah Palin's librarian, utterly uninterested in the report of Obama's intimate link with America's most corrupt governor.

Hail, hail the gang's all here!!!

WASHINGTON — It’s official. The old Clinton gang really is back together again. Answering the phones these days for the co-chairman of President-elect Barack Obama’s transition, John D. Podesta, is none other than Betty Currie.

Stephen Crowley/The New York Times

Betty Currie at her desk at the White house in July 1995 with President Bill Clinton and Anthony Lake, the national security advisor.

Emerging from retirement in southern Maryland to volunteer at Obama headquarters, Ms. Currie was the personal secretary to President Bill Clinton, who became caught up in an independent counsel investigation into his trysts with the White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Since leaving the White House, Ms. Currie, 69, has shied from publicity and kept a low profile in Hollywood, Md., where she lives with her husband, Bob, and Socks, the presidential cat, which she took with her after Mr. Clinton left office.

Shoeless Joe al-Zaidi no Folk Hero

by Janet Crain
This is a disgrace. Don't these talking heads know this nut case would kill any of us in a minute. Would conspire to cause a terrorist attack as bad or worse than 9/11. We have some people in the US with very short memories.

And it won't be long until the terrorists will demonstrate this hatred for newly elected Obama in spite of his middle name.

CBS and ABC Tout Shoe-Thrower as 'Celebrity' and 'Folk Hero' Usually rude protesters who disrupt events by throwing objects at state leaders don't earn media celebrations, but instead of being embarrassed by their Iraqi media colleague who, as he spewed venomous hatreds, dangerously threw his shoes at President Bush on Sunday in Baghdad, ABC and CBS on Monday night championed his popularity amongst Iraqis. ABC put "Folk Hero?" on screen as fill-in anchor Elizabeth Vargas trumpeted how Muntathar al-Zaidi has "become an instant celebrity to many of his countrymen" while CBS anchor Katie Couric hailed how "many Iraqis are calling him a hero" before reporter Elizabeth Palmer snidely concluded: "Al-Zaidi should do jail time, said the Iraqi bloggers, because he missed." From London, ABC's Jim Sciutto maintained: "Shoes have become a new symbol of anti-Americanism in the Arab world. And the Iraqi reporter who threw them, Muntathar al-Zaidi, a folk hero." Sciutto touted how "more than 100 lawyers volunteered to defend him. It was a heroic way to say goodbye to Bush, said one Iraqi." Though Sciutto at least noted how "some Iraqis are embarrassed," he countered: "Still, in news coverage, on new fan Web sites, in Arabic text messages, the overwhelming sentiment: giddy satisfaction."

Governor Palin's Church Torched

What kind of person would torch a church building with people inside? And pour accelerant around all the exits. These people meant for no one to survive. JC

Accelerant poured around Palin's church

Federal investigators say an accelerant was poured around the exterior of Gov. Sarah Palin's home church before it was heavily damaged by a fire.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said Monday that the accelerant was poured at several locations around the church, including entrances.

Federal Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Special Agent Nick Starcevic says laboratory tests will determine what the accelerant was.

The blaze was set at the main entrance of the Wasilla Bible Church on Friday evening while a small group of people, including two children, were inside. No one was injured.

Historians say Obama is no Lincoln

By & 12/15/08 4:36 AM EST

In Barack Obama's appearance last month on CBS's "60 Minutes," the conversation turned to the president-elect's long-time love of Lincoln. "There is a wisdom there," Obama told interviewer Steve Kroft, "and a humility about his approach to government, even before he was president, that I just find very helpful."
Humility? Obama's frequent invocations of Abraham Lincoln — a man enshrined in myth and marble with his own temple on the National Mall — would not at first blush say much about his own instincts for modesty or self-effacement. And now there are early rumblings of a backlash to Obama's ostentatious embrace of all things Lincoln, with his not-so-subtle invitations to compare the 44th president to the 16th, the "Savior of the Union." Simply put, some scholars think the comparisons have gone a bit over the top hat. Sean Wilentz, a scholar in American history at Princeton, said many presidents have sought to frame themselves in the historical legacies of illustrious predecessors, but he couldn't find any examples quite so brazen.

"Sure, they've looked back to Washington and even, at times, Jackson. Reagan echoed and at times swiped FDR's rhetoric," said Wilentz. "But there's never been anything like this, and on this scale. Ever."

The Audacity of Colin Powell

by Janet Crain
Last week Colin Powell went after Sarah Palin. Now he is blaming Rush Limbaugh for the sinking fortunes of the GOP. Some say he is trying to position himself as the new head of the Republican Party.

I don't think crossing party lines and endorsing the other party's candidate on national TV is exactly the best way to position yourself for a leadership role, but I would like to know what others think.

Would you support Colin Powell as head of the Republican Party or should he just fade away like a good old soldier.

Powell says the GOP tried to use 'polarization for political advantage.'
Powell says the GOP tried to use 'polarization for political advantage.'

(CNN) — The Republican party must stop "shouting at the world" and start listening to minority groups if it is to win elections in the 21st century, former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday.

In an interview with CNN's Fareed Zakaria for Sunday's "GPS" program, President Bush's former secretary of state said his party's attempt "to use polarization for political advantage" backfired last month.

"I think the party has to take a hard look at itself," Powell said in the interview, which was taped Wednesday. "There is nothing wrong with being conservative. There is nothing wrong with having socially conservative views — I don't object to that. But if the party wants to have a future in this country, it has to face some realities. In another 20 years, the majority in this country will be the minority."

Powell, who crossed party lines and endorsed President-elect Barack Obama just weeks before the election, said the GOP must see what is in the "hearts and minds" of African-American, Hispanic and Asian voters "and not just try to influence them by… the principles and dogma."

"I think the party has to stop shouting at the world and at the country,"Powell said. "I think that the party has to take a hard look at itself, and I've talked to a number of leaders in recent weeks and they understand that." Powell, who says he still considers himself a Republican, said his party should also stop listening to conservative radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

Suspicious fire heavily damages Wasilla Baptist Church

Hat Tip: http://right-mind.us/blogs/blog_0/archive/2008/12/13/64772.aspx

Here’s the story about the fire at Wasilla Baptist Church, the church Sarah Palin and her family attended when they were in Wasilla.
Note that people were inside when the fire was set.
Nothing like burning down churches of politicians you don’t like.

From the Anchorage Daily News:

Fire officials are investigating a suspicious blaze at one of the biggest churches in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. The pastor is estimating damage at more than $1 million. No one was injured in the fire at the Wasilla Bible Church, which started late Friday. About a half dozen church members were in the building doing crafts when the fire began but were able to get out safely after the building's fire alarm sounded, pastor Larry Kroon said.
"This fire is definitely suspicious," said Central Mat-Su Fire Chief James Steele.
The church, located off the Parks Highway on the north end of town, is one of the biggest in the Valley with a typical Sunday service drawing up to a 1,000 people.
Several well-known Valley residents attend the church, including Gov. Sarah Palin and Rep. Wes Keller, R-Wasilla.

Donations to Benefit Sarah Palin's Wasilla Bible Church
Posted: 13 Dec 2008 08:24 PM CST

It would be a wonderful thing for all of us to send a donation to Sarah Palin's church to help rebuild / repair the damage. I know they probably have insurance but chances are there's a hefty deductible. I think it would show that there are more folks who support Sarah and her church if we sent donation to help out. Here's the address if you'd like to send a check of some sort:Wasilla Bible Church1651 W. Nicola AvenueWasilla, Alaska 99654Please pass along the word to various groups and in your blogs.

Where's Jimmy?

Man behind curtain is wizard of Rod, Rahm

Just when you think you've met the whole cast, another character is introduced. And what a character! JC

Secretary of commerce announcement

President-elect Barack Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emanuel (2nd from left) listens as Obama introduces New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson as his nominee for Secretary of Commerce at a press conference at the Hilton Chicago. (Tribune photo by Nancy Stone / December 3, 2008)

When it comes to being the guy behind the guy, there is no one more conspicuous than Rahm Emanuel.

As chief of staff for President-elect Barack Obama, he's usually at Obama's news conferences, standing off to the side, glowering like some fiercely loyal mini-me.

But Emanuel wasn't there Thursday when Obama faced reporters to answer questions about federal charges against Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D-Dead Meat), accused of trying to sell Obama's Senate seat to the highest bidder.

"I have never spoken to the governor on this subject," Obama said. "I am confident that no representatives of mine would have any part of any deals related to this."

Wow. No staffers tried to make a deal for his Senate seat?

"I've asked my team to gather the facts of any contacts with the governor's office about this vacant seat, so that we can share them with you over the next few days," Obama said.

He could have just asked Emanuel, but he wasn't there, and reporters kept wondering, "Where's Rahm? Where's Rahm?" What they should have been asking is, "Where's Jimmy?"

As in state Sen. James DeLeo (D-How You Doin?)

DeLeo is an extremely powerful politician. You know this because he's hardly ever quoted in newspaper stories.

Emanuel and DeLeo have a relationship. Emanuel is the congressman from the 5th Congressional District, where DeLeo is the Democratic state central committeeman. What hasn't been reported on much is that Emanuel has not yet resigned from the House. And if you want to play politics in Jimmy's sandbox, you need his OK.

DeLeo is also considered by some to be the real governor of Illinois. Blagojevich is the nutty guy who makes the speeches and gets the federal slap. They're so close that if Jimmy suddenly stopped walking, Rod would chip his teeth on the back of Jimmy's head.

So how close are Rahm and Jimmy? We're about to find out. JC
